where do we go now?

for contrabass clarinet and B-flat trumpet

where do we go now? was written for the Ensemble Intercontemporain at Ircam’s Manifeste festival and masterclass.

The work plays with genre; at a surface level, it is inspired by spectral works (in particular, Nout from Gérard Grisey’s Anubis-Nout. However, a depressive, almost naively simple minor tonality permeates the work, at first not readily apparent, heard as it is with timbres and sounds have that different connotations.

Besides Grisey’s work, Heather Roche’s wonderful blog was a major source for the clarinet part. As with Anubis-Nout, the work is written for the LeBlanc paperclip contrabass clarinet.
